South Africa’s triumphant victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup sparked the beginnings of Friends of South Africa, Nashville. On the day of the championship match, a dozen or so proud, homesick expats gathered in Nashville to celebrate the historic win.

More than three decades later, our Middle Tennessee community has grown considerably. We gather to watch rugby, host monthly Tannies Teas and annual braais (barbecues), enjoy music nights and cricket matches, and look forward to our annual holiday market. We also take part in life here in Middle Tennessee—from Nashville’s dragon boat races to group hikes in local parks—while proudly celebrating our South African roots.

For many years, we’ve welcomed new arrivals and helped them find their feet. More recently, we joined hands with N.I.C.E. to welcome dozens of refugees and help them settle in. Our regular members have become family here in Nashville, and we’re always glad when visitors stop by for a quick ‘hallo’—often at The Lost Paddy Irish Pub to watch a rugby match.

Living in Music City USA, we love supporting South African artists who perform around town. We also welcome vendors to our events, where you can find biltong, boerewors, South African wine and other delicacies.

For the latest on our activities, follow Friends of South Africa, Nashville, on Facebook, or email us to be added to the mailing list.
